lasagna

Lasagna is a classic Italian dish known for its layers of pasta, rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and melted cheese. Here's a basic recipe:

Ingredients:

- Lasagna noodles (pre-cooked according to package instructions)
- 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 cans (6 oz each) tomato paste
- 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef or sausage over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, and cook until onions are softened.

3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine (if using), oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

4. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese with an egg until well combined.

5. In a baking dish, layer the ingredients: start with a thin layer of meat sauce, add a layer of lasagna noodles, followed by a layer of ricotta mixture, and sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.

6. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for about 25-30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

7. Allow the lasagna to rest for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.

Enjoy your homemade lasagna!
