Momo is a type of dumpling that originated in Tibet but has become a popular and beloved dish in many Asian cuisines, especially in Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of India. Here's a basic recipe for making momos:
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- Water (as needed)
- A pinch of salt
For the Filling:
- 1 cup minced meat (chicken, lamb, or beef)
- Finely chopped vegetables (cabbage, carrots, etc.)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- Garlic and ginger paste
- Soy sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. **Prepare the Dough:**
- Mix the all-purpose flour with a pinch of salt. Gradually add water and knead to form a smooth, elastic dough. Cover and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
2. **Prepare the Filling:**
- In a bowl, combine minced meat, chopped vegetables, onion, garlic and ginger paste, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
3. **Shape the Momos:**
- Roll out small portions of the dough into thin circles. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each circle.
4. **Fold and Seal:**
- Fold the circle in half, creating a half-moon shape, and then pinch the edges to seal the momo.
5. **Steam:**
- Arrange the momos in a steamer and steam for about 15-20 minutes until the dough is cooked and the filling is tender.
6. **Serve:**
- Serve momos hot with a dipping sauce made of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili.
