French fries
French fries, also known as chips or fries, are a popular side dish made from potatoes. Here's a basic recipe to make them:
Ingredients:
- Potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold are commonly used)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Salt, to taste
Instructions:
1. Wash and peel the potatoes (if desired). You can also leave the skin on for a more rustic texture.
2. Cut the potatoes into evenly sized sticks, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
3. Soak the potato sticks in cold water for about 30 minutes to remove excess starch. This helps the fries become crispier when fried.
4. Drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to around 350-375°F (175-190°C).
6. Carefully add the potato sticks to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the fryer/pot.
7. Fry the potatoes for about 3-5 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
8. Use a slotted spoon or spider strainer to remove the fries from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
9. Season the fries with salt while they are still hot.
10. Repeat the frying process with the remaining batches of potatoes.
11. Serve the French fries hot and enjoy them with your favorite dipping sauces, such as ketchup, mayonnaise, or aioli.
