Bertha's Blueberry Dumplings: A Classic Recipe

Bertha's Blueberry Dumplings are a traditional American dessert that features fluffy biscuits filled with sweet blueberries. They're perfect for a cozy breakfast or afternoon tea.

Ingredients:

For the Biscuits:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup milk

For the Blueberry Filling:

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Make the biscuits: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk just until the dough comes together.
  2. Roll out the dough: Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut out circles using a 3-inch cookie cutter.
  3. Prepare the blueberry filling: In a medium bowl, combine the blueberries, sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
  4. Assemble the dumplings: Place a spoonful of the blueberry filling in the center of each biscuit circle. Fold the edges of the biscuit over the filling and pinch to seal.
  5. Bake: Place the dumplings on a greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 375°F (190°C) oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  6. Serve: Serve warm with butter, whipped cream, or a drizzle of maple syrup.

Enjoy these classic blueberry dumplings!

For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the biscuit dough.
